Veysel Yayan: Measures needed to revive steel production in Turkey

Thursday, 13 July 2023 14:17:48 (GMT+3)   |   Istanbul

Speaking to Turkish TV channel Bloomberg HT, Veysel Yayan, secretary general of the Turkish Steel Producers’ Association (TCUD), has stated that the destructive effect of the earthquake on Turkey’s steel production has been left behind completely as of this month, however the average steel production for this year declined due to the disruptions seen in the output in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Stating that the steel production capacity in Turkey is twice the actual production levels and that measures are needed to revive production, Mr. Yayan added that foreign exchange policy should be maintained until a reasonable balance is achieved.

Reminding that energy prices in Turkey have increased more than in other countries, resulting in a decrease in Turkish steel industry’s competitiveness, secretary general of the TCUD noted that it is important to maintain the export-based economy model and to establish a free market mechanism.
