Brazilian iron ore miner Vale announced the start of works to decommission the rejects dam 1A, located in the Conceição Mine of Itabira, in the southwestern state of Minas Gerais.

The 1A dam was built with upstream technology, the same used for the construction of the Brumadinho dam, which collapsed in 2019. Since the accident, 12 such dams were already decommissioned by Vale, from a total of 30 dams.

The decommissioning of the 1A dam is expected to be concluded in 2024.

All the dams built under the upstream technology by Vale are inactive today and are expected to be decommissioned by 2035.
