US Trade Representative issues notice of NAFTA renegotiation

The US Trade Representative (USTR) has officially notified the US Congress of President Trump’s intent to renegotiate the 23-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that facilitates trade between the US, Canada and Mexico.

Given the 90 day advance announcement, negotiations can begin after August 16, 2017. The USTR will consult with seek input from businesses and individuals for the next 60 days. Thirty days prior to active negotiations, the USTR will communicate the detailed items to Congress.

According to the notification, USTR intends to renegotiate outdated trade elements including digital trade, intellectual property rights, regulatory practices, state-owned enterprises, services, customs procedures, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, labor, environment, and small and medium enterprises.
