In yet another layoff announcement, US Steel told media that it plans to shut down its coke plant in Granite City, Illinois, by March 22, 2015, which will affect 176 employees.

According to the company, the coke ovens, which are 30 years old, have aged beyond current market efficiency.

The company will meet with the United Steelworkers of America to discuss how the shutdown will affect labor agreements.

The rest of the Granite City facility will remain in operation—US Steel plans to replace a casting machine next month.

Earlier this in January, the company announced layoffs totaling 756 workers in pipe and tube plants in Texas and Ohio.
