US steel imports rise 2.6 percent in January

According to US preliminary census data, US monthly steel imports in January 2017 increased 2.6 percent from December 2016 (census data) to total 2,512,193 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 4.6 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel imports in January totaled $1.96 billion, compared to $1.91 billion in December and $1.86 billion in January 2016.
 
Top sources for US steel imports in January include: Canada, with 481,691 mt; Korea, with 282,391 mt; Turkey with 277,422 mt; Brazil, with 269,128 mt; Mexico, with 229,268 mt; and Japan, with 161,319 mt.
 
Major steel products imported in January include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 424,439 mt; HDG, at 277,251 mt; rebar, at 199,112 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 193,198 mt; OCTG, at 165,124 mt; and hot rolled sheets, at 141,768 mt.
