According to US import data, preliminary census totals for steel imports in September totaled 2,489,925 mt, a 10.2 percent decrease from August census totals. A year-on-year comparison shows a 3.2 percent decline. In terms of value, US imports in September totaled $1.84 billion, compared to $2.05 billion in August and also $2.05 billion in September 2015.
The top sources for imported steel in September were Brazil, with 379,671 mt, followed by Canada, with 376,818 mt; Korea, with 257,169 mt; Mexico, with 228,386 mt; Japan, with 171,132 mt; Russia, with 144,378 mt; and Turkey, with 143,870 mt.
Major products imported to the US in September include HDG, at 240,217 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 215,145 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 168,894 mt; rebar, at 151,749 mt; and wire rod, at 118,027 mt.
