According to local reports, US Steel eliminated jobs Thursday at its Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania headquarters. Details of the number of layoffs were not released, but spokeswoman Courtney Boone said employees in operations and business support would be impacted.

"We are undergoing a comprehensive transformation process (The Carnegie Way) which is focused on returning our company to sustainable profitability," Boone said in a statement. "As reported in our recent earnings call, we will realize $290 million in benefits in 2014, a portion of that is related to headcount reductions in locations throughout the world, including Pittsburgh, our headquarters city. These have been difficult decisions but have been carefully considered."
