The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Monday that estimated US raw steel production for last week (which ended February 21, 2009) totaled just under a million net tons, at 998,000 nt. This represents a 7.9 percent decrease in production from the previous week.

Compared to the same week of 2008, US raw steel production for the week ended February 21, 2009 was down 54.4 percent.

Capacity utilization for the week ended February 21 stood at 41.8 percent, down from 45.4 percent in the prior week, and in stark contrast to the 91.6 percent percent capability utilization rate for the same week of 2008.

The AISI's estimated raw steel production tonnage is compiled from weekly production data provided from 50 percent of domestic producers combined with monthly production data for the remainder.
