US raw steel production shows another week-on-week decline

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, in the week ending April 5, 2014, domestic raw steel production was 1,762,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 73.3 percent. Production was 1,834,000 net tons in the week ending April 5, 2013, while the capability utilization then was 76.6 percent. The current week production represents a 3.9 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending April 5, 2014 is down 3.2 percent from the previous week ending March 29, 2014 when production was 1,820,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 75.7 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through April 5, 2014 was 24,846,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 76.3percent. That is a 0.7percent decrease from the 25,014,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 76.9 percent.
