US hot rolled bar imports up 19.5 percent in May

According to final census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of hot rolled bar totaled 72,004 mt in May 2023, up 19.5 percent from April but down 10.6 percent from May 2022 levels. By value, hot rolled bar imports totaled $99.7 million in May 2023, compared to $85.2 million in April and $116.3 million in May 2022.

The US imported the most hot rolled bar from Canada in May, with 28,636 mt, compared to 26,488 mt in April and 40,037 mt in May 2022. Other top sources of imported hot rolled bar in May include Japan, with 14,534 mt; Brazil, with 11,255 mt; Mexico, with 6,919 mt; and France, with 4,379 mt.
