The US Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) announced Wednesday that the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry remained the same in July as in June. Nonetheless, for the first seven months of 2011, freight shipments measured by the index were up 1.3 percent from the same period in 2010.

Freight shipments in the US were up 3.8 percent from July 2010 to July 2011. Long term trends from the BTS also indicate that freight shipments are down 2.3 percent in the five years from July 2006, and shipments are up 10 percent in the 10 years from July 2001 despite recent declines.
