According to the information released by the Ukrainian Ministry of Industrial Policy, in the first five months of 2007 the country increased its finished steel products output by eight percent and its crude steel output by nine percent year on year to 15.008 million metric tons and 17.859 million metric tons respectively. Meanwhile, during the period in question Ukraine's pig iron production rose 12 percent to 14.8 million metric tons, compared to the corresponding period of 2006.
During the given period, Ukraine saw a 20 percent increase in its steel pipe production to 1.2 million metric tons and an eight percent increase in its coke production to 8.3 million metric tons.
In its iron ore segment, in the January-May 2007 period Ukraine produced 31.8 million metric tons of iron ore - up nine percent, 24.91 million metric tons of iron ore concentrate - up 11 percent, 9.3 million metric tons of pellets- up 19 percent, and 20.9 million metric tons of agglomerate - up six percent, compared to the first five months of 2006.
In addition, during the January-May 2007 period, scrap supplies to the Ukrainian steel mills increased by 18 percent year on year to 2.91 million metric tons.
