According to a statement released by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (DCUD), in June this year Turkey's crude steel production rose by four percent year on year, exceeding 2.9 million mt. However, the country's crude steel production in June decreased 4.7 percent compared to May this year.
In June, of the total crude steel production in Turkey, steel production using electric arc furnaces (EAF) rose 8.6 percent, while production via blast furnaces fell by 9.4 percent to 658,000 mt, both compared to June 2011.
In the month in question, Turkey's steel billet output moved up by 16.2 percent to 2.3 million mt, while its slab output fell by 24.6 percent on the back of the contraction in global markets to 638,000 mt, both on year-on-year basis.
In the first half of the current year, Turkey's crude steel production exceeded 17.9 million mt, up 9.3 percent year on year. In this period, steel production using EAFs amounted to 13.5 million mt, with an increase of 11.9 percent, while production via blast furnaces rose by 1.7 percent to 4.4 million mt, both compared to the first half of 2011.
The association noted that in the first six months of 2012 Turkey's steel billet output moved up by 16.5 percent to 13.5 million mt, while its slab output fell by eight percent to 4.5 million mt, both on year-on-year basis.
