Turkey’s scrap imports up 11.2 percent in Jan-Feb

According to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in February this year Turkey's steel scrap imports rose by 43.2 percent compared to January and were up 26.7 percent compared to the same month of 2011, amounting to 2.15 million metric tons.

According to the data released by TUIK, in February the average price of Turkey's steel scrap imports stood at $450/mt, increasing by $17/mt compared to the previous month and up $29/mt compared to February 2011.

Meanwhile, in the first two months of 2012 Turkey's scrap imports amounted to 3.7 million mt, increasing 11.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

In the January-February period of this year, the US was Turkey's top scrap import source with 779,800 mt, up 20 percent, while the Netherlands followed the US almost tripling its scrap exports to Turkey with 492,000 mt, both compared to January-February 2011. In the period in question, the UK exported 399,526 mt of steel scrap to Turkey, increasing 6.1 percent, while Russia's scrap exports to Turkey amounted to 342,172 mt, down 5.5 percent, both compared to the same period of the previous year.
