Turkey’s steel import volume down 23 percent in H1

In June this year, Turkey’s steel imports decreased by 35 percent to 1.21 million mt, year on year, as announced by the Turkish Steel Producers' Association (TCUD). 

In June, Turkey, which is the second largest rebar exporter in the world, imported a total of 18,000 mt of rebar from Italy - the first time in recent years that rebar imports from Italy have reached such a volume. Turkey also imported 5,000 mt of rebar from Georgia in the given month.

In the month of June, Turkey’s semi-finished steel imports decreased by 63.1 percent to 285,000 mt, while Turkey’s flat steel imports fell by 8.4 percent to 723,000 mt, both compared to the same month of the previous year. In June, total long steel product imports were down by 32.5 percent to 118,000 mt, year on year.

In June, Turkey's steel export volume was equivalent to 114 percent of its steel import volume, compared to 92 percent in the same month of 2016.

In the first half of this year, Turkey's steel imports continued their declining trend. In the given period, Turkey's steel imports decreased by 23 percent to 7.57 million mt, year on year. 

In the January-June period of this year, Turkey’s semi-finished imports fell by 37.6 percent to 2.26 million mt, while Turkey’s flat steel imports decreased by 12.3 percent to 4.15 million mt, both year on year.

In the given period, Turkey's steel export volume was equivalent to 121 percent of its steel import volume, compared to 91 percent in the same period of 2016.
