Turkey’s Erdemir posts H1 loss of TRY 196 million

Turkey's largest steelmaking group Erdemir has posted a net loss of TRY 196 million (US$131.5 million) in the first half of 2009, compared to a net profit of TRY 854 million in the corresponding period of 2008, while its net sales fell by 36.3 percent year on year to TRY 2.303 billion (US$1.544 billion).
 
During the first half of 2009, Erdemir's Eregli works decreased its finished steel production by 14.7 percent year on year to 2.011 million mt. Meanwhile, Erdemir's Iskenderun works' finished steel output decreased by 20.7 percent year on year to 1.301 million mt.
 
In the period in question, the production capacity utilization of Erdemir's Eregli plant was 93.1 percent, while its Iskenderun-based plant's capacity usage was 54.3 percent.
