Turkey’s coking coal imports down 15.7 percent in April

According to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in April this year Turkey's coking coal imports amounted to 1.88 million mt, down 15.7 percent year on year and decreasing by 19.7 percent compared to March. Turkey's coking coal imports had risen moderately in March as compared to February after indicating a monthly average of 2 million mt in the first two months of the current year, as can be seen in the chart below. Meanwhile, in April this year the country's coking coal imports decreased to the lowest level recorded since January 2012. In the first four months of the current year, Turkey's coking coal imports totaled 8.2 million metric tons, decreasing 6.9 percent compared to the same period of 2012.


 
Turkey's coking coal imports from Russia, Turkey's largest coking coal source in the first four months of the year, amounted to 479,587 mt in April, decreasing strongly both on year-on-year and month-on-month basis. Turkey's coking coal imports from South Africa, which was its second largest coking coal source in the first four months, increased to 654,933 mt, more than double compared to the same month of 2012.
