On February 19, 2009, Turkey's Undersecretariat of the Prime Ministry for Foreign Trade announced notification of foreign trade standardization for imports of metal scrap, within the scope of improving environmental safety.

According to the notification which has entered into effect following its release in Turkey's Official Gazette, manufacturers, who process metal scrap via melting and who preprocess scrap via crushing and compression to increase the scrap's quality and density, are allowed to import scrap so long as they are officially certified as scrap importers.

In addition, scrap importers are obliged to use radiation measurement system approved by the Turkish Atomic Energy Institution, and also have to ensure their employees receive safety training for radiation-related work.
