German steel giant ThyssenKrupp's stainless unit ThyssenKrupp Nirosta has announced that it has received permission from Hagen environmental agency to continue to operate and increase the capacity of the Marbach landfill in Bochum-Hamme, Germany.
The permit allows ThyssenKrupp Nirosta to dump slag from its neighboring Bochum stainless steel mill. While most of the slag produced as the by-product of stainless steel production is used for noise barriers in the construction industry, a fifth of it is dumped as landfill.
ThyssenKrupp Nirosta has made some commitments to the environmental agency and the city of Bochum so as not to disturb local residents and the natural environment, implementing measures to minimize the impact of the landfill operation.
