ThyssenKrupp delivers second Class 209PN submarine to Portuguese Navy

German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp has announced that Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft delivered and commissioned the second Class 209PN submarine for the Portuguese Navy on its premises in Kiel. Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel is a company of ThyssenKrupp subsidiary ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

According to a ThyssenKrupp release, the new submarine named N.R.P. Arpão is equipped with an air-independent fuel cell propulsion system, ultra-modern sensors and an integrated command and weapon control system.

The contract on the two Class 209PN submarines was signed in 2004 with the Portuguese State. Production for N.R.P. ARPÃO started at the end of 2005, with the naming ceremony taking place on June 18, 2009.
