Ternium Mexico expects extension on duties for certain steel imports

Mexican steelmaker Ternium Mexico expects an existing 15 percent duty on certain steel imports to be further renewed, according to a media report from Reportacero.

Ternium Mexico didn’t respond to a request sent by SteelOrbis for comments.

Ternium Mexico said the decision by the country’s economy secretariat, SE., to continue the 15 percent duty, was a correct move.

The 15 percent duty was first introduced in October 2015. It was then renewed several times.

The 15 percent duty is valid for certain steel imports for the countries Mexico doesn’t have trade agreements with. The products include slab, CRC, HRC, heavy plate and wire rod from other countries, especially China, Taiwan and South Korea.

The provisional tariff expires on October this year.
