Mexican steelmaker Ternium Mexico announced this week it is developing a new steel grade for electric engines in the household appliance sector. The company said it developed the product with researchers of a “top-notch” university in the US.

“[It’s] a specialty, semi-processed electric steel grade of low-magnetic-loss aimed at a more efficient energy consumption in electric engines,” the company said, adding the new steel grade has high impermeability and reduces magnetic loss “by at least” 20 percent when compared to previous steel grades available in the market.

“That makes the [product become] the most efficient steel for the production of engines in Mexico,” said Angel Rebolledo, sales manager at the appliance sectors at Ternium Mexico.

Ternium Mexico said large-scale production for the product is under way.
