Indian steelmaker Tata Steel Ltd. disclosed on May 17 that its net profit jumped 41 percent from a year ago in the fourth quarter ended March 30, 2007, helped by robust demand and higher prices for steel.

The company said net profit rose to Rupees 11.04 billion ($270 million) in the fiscal fourth quarter.

Tata Steel's revenue rose 21.4 percent to Rupees 50.60 billion ($1.23 billion) in the latest quarter.

A construction boom in India, where the economy has been growing close to nine percent annually, has spurred demand for steel and pushed up steel prices.
