Steel tonnages up 75 percent at Port of Houston

The Port of Houston, Texas authority reported Thursday that commodity growth, and particularly steel growth surged in May. The port's CEO Alec G. Dreyer said that after robust growth in March and April, "in May, steel had another strong month and was up 75 percent with 372,000 tons. Year-to-date steel volumes are ahead of last year by 70 percent and we expect a tremendous month is June with over 400,000 tons by the end of the month."

Additionally, ship arrivals at the port's container facilities were up 9.7 percent in May, and twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) volumes were up 3 percent in May, and 8 percent year-to-date. Container tonnage was up 5 percent in May and 9 percent year-to-date.
