Steel shipments soar 143 percent at Port of Houston in February

The Port of Houston said Tuesday during its monthly Port Commission meeting that total tonnage handled by the port was up 26 percent through February, driven by an increase in steel shipments. Steel shipments were up 143 percent (329,000 tons) year-on-year in February and increased 119 percent (564,000 tons) for 2012 so far.

Container tonnage at the port climbed 6 percent or 147,000 tons and other general/bulk cargos increased 44 percent.
