Steel employment in Mexico up 3.3 percent in September

Formal employment in the Mexican steel industry registered a growth of 3.3 percent, year-over-year, with 142,730 workers in September, the 30th consecutive annual increase, according to a SteelOrbis analysis of official data.

In September, formal employment (with social security registration) throughout the Mexican economy and employment in the manufacturing industry in the country registered new historical records with 22.13 million and 6.07 million workers, respectively.

In the Basic Metals Industry, which has accumulated 30 consecutive months with annual growth, in September it hovers around the levels of the historical maximum of last May with 143,094 workers, according to the records of the social security institute (IMSS), reviewed by SteelOrbis.

Nuevo León remains the largest steel economy in Mexico, by number of jobs, with 28,551 workers (20.0 percent of the total). That entity includes companies such as the Luxembourg-based steel giant Ternium, the deployed metal manufacturer Ladesa; the Mexican unit of Signode Industrial Group, and the Mexican AB Tube (Maquilacero) and Zincacero of Grupo Villacero, just to mention a few companies.

With companies such as DeAcero, Industrias Maass de México, Conduit, Procarsa (Proveedora Cárdenas), Pytco, Tatsa, among others in Coahuila placed the state in second place with 19,249 workers (13.5 percent of the total); followed by the State of Mexico with 13,184 workers (9.2 percent). These three states concentrate 42.7 percent of the total.

Veracruz has the fourth position with 11,853 workers (8.3 percent), followed by Guanajuato with 11,732 workers (8.2 percent). Together these five states concentrate 59.2 percent of the 142,730 employed workers in the country. Considering the top 10 steel economies in Mexico, employment represents 81.8 percent of the total.

Of the top 10, the State of Mexico, Veracruz and San Luis Potosí stand out (6,973 workers) with a state historical maximum in September.

In September, the steel industry in Mexico contributed 2.35 percent of total manufacturing employment (6.07 million workers) or 0.64 percent of total formal employment in Mexico, which totaled 22.13 million workers.
