Elizabethtown, Kentucky-based manufacturer of wire shelves and baskets for refrigerators and freezers, Southern Steel and Wire Company (SSW), has announced that it will shut down major production at its Fort Smith, Arkansas plant.

The major Whirlpool appliances supplier plans to cease major production by late December and completely halt manufacturing operations early next year, as Whirlpool Corp. has experienced a decreased demand for its products, and much of Whirlpool Corp. production has been moved out of Fort Smith, and into Mexico.

The 117 employees at the Arkansas location will lose their jobs, however plant equipment will be permanently stored, with hope that the company can re-start its operation when the economy rebounds.
