South Korean shipbuilding industry ranks second after China in H1 orders

In the first half of 2010, South Korea ranked second after China in shipbuilding orders received, according to the information provided by South Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy.

Accordingly, in the January-June period of this year, South Korean shipbuilders won a total of 4.62 million compensated gross tons (CGT) in orders, representing a 450 percent increase as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The value of the orders totaled $9.1 billion in the given period, up 116 percent year on year.

Despite the surge in orders, the combined global market share of South Korean shipbuilders was 38 percent, while China topped the list with 41 percent in the first six months of this year.
