SMS Siemag to modernize BOF shop of Turkey’s Kardemir

Germany-based plantmaker SMS Siemag announced that Turkish integrated long steel producer Karabük Demir Celik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S. (Kardemir) has ordered an extensive modernization and expansion of the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) shop in Karabuk, Turkey.

Kardemir plans to increase production from 1.3 million mt to a total of 3 million mt. To achieve this target, SMS Siemag will increase the volume of each of the two installed converters from 67 to 121 m3 and supply a new third converter with a capacity of 120 mt.

SMS Siemag stated that commissioning of the new converter is scheduled for September 2013. Upon completion of the commissioning, certain other modernization measures will be performed.
