German plantmaking group SMS Group's subsidiary SMS Meer has announced that Malaysian steel producer Amsteel Mills Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Lion Group, has placed an order with the company for the modernization of the wire rod outlet in the wire rod and bar mill at its Banting works in the state of Selangor. The mill was supplied by Italian plantmaker Danieli in 1995.

The modernization comprises the supply of new core components for the existing wire rod outlet. In addition, the automation system of the wire rod outlet is to be updated. The CCT® (Controlled Cooling Technology) process model developed by SMS Meer, for optimal temperature control, and hence optimum microstructural properties, also forms part of the scope of supply.

The aim of the modernization at Amsteel Mills is to enable rolling of 16 mm surface-quenched and tempered rebars at the wire rod and bar mill, to improve mill availability and to increase production by raising the maximum rolling speed from 80 m/s to 105 m/s. The modernization is to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2011.
