German plantmaker SMS Demag AG has received a major order from German-based steel producer Peiner Träger GmbH, a company of the Salzgitter Group, for the construction of an X-Melt electric arc furnace melt shop and for the revamp of a continuous beam blank caster to an X-Cast combined slab/beam blank caster.

The new two-strand combined continuous caster X-Cast will be able to produce 250 mm thick slabs ranging in width between 800 and 1,100 mm, as well as beam blanks with dimensions of 1,150 mm x 490 mm x 130 mm.

SMS Demag will supply the 125-mt ARCCESS® electric arc furnace, the supply system and two 125-mt ladle furnaces.

The new continuous caster No. 2 of Peiner Träger GmbH will be Germany's first combined caster for the production of beam blanks and slabs.

Although there will not be any increase in beams output, the company is expected to register a higher overall steelmaking capacity.
