Shanxi ponders coke production curbs

Blind productivity expansion in the coking industry has been a major factor in the plummeting coke prices in China's Shanxi Province, Coke prices in Shanxi have slid from $400ton in the first quarter of this year to around $200/ton at present. Personnel from Shanxi Provincial Development and Reform Commission point out that a drop in steel production is also to blame for the falling coke prices in Shanxi. The combination of increased output and less demand means that coke inventories at Shanxi province's Tianjin Port have reached 3.5 million tons; amounts over 2.5 million tons are considered to be excessive. In an effort to deal with the situation, Shanxi Province has adopted certain measures to cut production and control the overall coke output. The Shanxi Provincial Coking Industry Association has also lent a hand by mapping out production cut regulations.
