Integrated North American flat rolled steelmaker, Severstal Warren Inc, has announced that it will further delay the restart of its steelmaking operations due to the effects of the economic slump.
The company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Russia's OAO Severstal and an operating division of Severstal North America, had originally planned to restart the blast furnace at its Warren, Ohio plant as of June 1. The plant's production, along with the rest of the Warren operations with the exception of its galvanizing mill, were first idled in October 2008. Now, in addition to delaying the restart of the blast furnace indefinitely, according to a report by the United Steelworkers union, the Warren mill is planning to completely shut down all operations, including the galvanizing mill, as of April 1, until demand picks up again.
Last year, the plant underwent repairs while production was on hold, but employees were kept until December, when the company finally decided to lay off 800 of its 1,000 hourly paid laborers and 250 salaried employees. Moreover, other Severstal North America mills in the US have reduced or stopped steel production.
