The Russian steelmaker Severstal has announced the commencement of the testing of processing lines at its Leningrad region-based steel service center subsidiary Severstal SMC Kolpino.

Currently, a lot of 30 mt of plate is being treated on three processing lines at the Kolpino facility: namely, on a cutting line equipped with four plasma-cutting machines; on a conservation line where the plate is smoothed out and given a protective coating; and also on a line for welding structures.

As Severstal Kolipo's general director Yuri Bilichenko stated, "The testing is directed toward the accurate adjustment of the equipment and finalizing the technology before commencing the production capacities. During the testing, it is planned to check if the complex is ready to manufacture the entire production assortment which Severstal SMC Kolpino will output. This will allow us to estimate the quality of treated coil for our future customers from shipbuilding, machine building and the construction industry."

Severstal plans to commission Severstal SMC Kolpino in August 2008. The steel service center will have a designed annual processing capacity of 80,000 mt.
