Severstal mine hit by explosion

A gas explosion at Severstal subsidiary Vorkutaugol's Komsomolskaya coal mine has resulted in the death of the eight people.

The blast struck the coal mine on Monday evening.

The cause of the accident is to be investigated by Russia's federal Rostekhnadzor authorities, a Severstal official said.

The Komsomolskaya coal mine has been shut down temporarily. In 2006 the mine output totaled 2.452 million metric tons of 2G grade coal.
