Russian steelmaker Severstal has announced that it has completed the reconstruction of the air heaters of blast furnace No. 5 at its subsidiary Cherepovets Steel Mill (CherMK) with an investment of more than RUB 2.3 billion ($39.34 million).

As part of the reconstruction works, Severstal has installed new air heaters, with a service life of at least 30 years. Thanks to the new air heaters, the temperature of the furnace has been increased and this will ensure a reduction in the cost of cast iron.

With a designed annual production capacity of four million mt, CherMK’s blast furnace No. 5 is one of the largest furnaces in Europe. The furnace provides about 50 percent of the cast iron that CherMK needs.
