The Serbian authorities have postponed until September 10 the deadline for binding offers for local steelworks Zelezara Smederevo, formerly US Steel Serbia, citing requests from potential buyers. According to a statement from Serbia's finance ministry, the second extension of the deadline within two months is a result of "interest from participants in the tender who need more time before deciding on a bid."

As previously reported by SteelOrbis, bids have already been received from Ukraine-based Donetskstal Group, Luxembourg-based United Pilsen and Russian company Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company. The original deadline was May 4, but this was subsequently extended to June 11.

Interested parties should meet the following requirements: they should be operating in the steel market, should have assets worth €1.5 billion or should have recorded revenues of over $1 billion in 2011.
