Republican Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona has introduced a bill in the US Senate for annulling the recently announced import steel and aluminum tariffs.

He stated that he brought forth the bill since President Trump’s tariffs could lead the US to trade wars that could end up hurting the US economy and result in job losses. He also cited the fact that various trade associations, economists, and business organizations have also protested the tariffs on basis of ineffective and inciting retaliation.

The future of the legislation is unknown as senators who may have previously backed the legislation will likely prefer to work with President Trump on obtaining exemptions through updated trade negotiations. The trade negotiations to obtain exemption are being viewed by some policy makers as an opportunity to address grievances or an opportunity to expand interests of constituents.
