Scrap shipbreaking overview for 2018

According to research data provided to SteelOrbis, 755 vessels were scrapped worldwide in 2018. India scrapped 251 (33 percent), followed by Bangladesh with 198 (26 percent), Turkey with 113 (15 percent), Pakistan with 80 (11 percent), China with 22 (3 percent), and 91 (12 percent) in other countries.

In displacement tonnage terms (LDT), the worldwide ship tonnage that was scrapped is estimated at 6.37 million LDT. Of the total, 38 percent was processed in Bangladesh (Chittagong port), 33 percent in India (Alang port), 20 percent in Pakistan (Gadani port), 5 percent in Turkey, 3 percent in China, and 1 percent in other destinations.
