Schnitzer hires scrap expert for sales position

Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc. announced scrap veteran Alter Goldstein is joining the company as vice president of Export Sales. Mr. Goldstein has over thirty years experience working for trading firms, including Philipp Brothers, Amalgamet, Clarendon Ltd. and Glencore Ltd. He will be responsible for the Asian export trading business of Schnitzer’s current metals recycling operations. John D. Carter, president and CEO of Schnitzer said, “Alter bolsters our management capabilities and will help us meet our strategy to strengthen and enhance the scrap international trading business to meet the growth of our network of scrap supply sources and processing capabilities.” Schnitzer has been on a hiring spree lately. CEO John D. Carter was only just appointed last week and in late July they added Jill Schnitzer Edelson as the new independent director of the board. The new hires are part of Schnitzer’s effort to implement NASDAQ-mandated standards that more than half of their company’s board members need to be independent directors by January 2006 Portland, Oregon-based Schnitzer Steel Industries is one of the largest recyclers of ferrous metals in the U.S. They also produce 700’000 tons of finished steel products per year. The company operates mainly along the West and Northeastern coasts of the US.
