Sichuan Province-based Panzhihua Steel Group has been greatly affected by the May 12 earthquake which had its epicenter in Wenchuan.

Of Panzhihua Steel's various production bases, Changcheng Special Steel has suffered the greatest impact with human casualties and damaged equipment and workshops, resulting in a complete halt in production. Furthermore, other mills of Panzhihua Steel Group, including Panchengang, Panyu Titanium, Jinshan Refractory and Meishan Cold Forming Section Steel have also seen a total shutdown of production. Although their manufacturing equipment has not registered any great damage, these latter mills have run out of the raw materials necessary for production due to blocked transportation.

At present, only Panzhihua Steel's main facility is still maintaining production, but its raw material stocks are expected to be exhausted soon; besides, they are also unable to transport their products to other regions. As a result, if the transportation problems are not resolved soon, the producer's main facility will have to halt its production as well.
