Pakistan’s scrap imports up 15.4 percent in May over April

Pakistan's iron and steel scrap imports amounted to 121,563 mt in May this year, increasing 15.4 percent compared to April and down 14.5 percent year on year, according to data released by the Pakistan Federal Bureau of Statistics (PFBS). The value of the iron and steel scrap imports was $41.8 million in May, rising 24 percent compared to April this year and down six percent compared to the same month of 2011.

Pakistan's scrap imports in the July 2011-May 2012 period amounted to 1.43 million mt, decreasing 1.1 percent compared to the same period one year earlier. In the period in question, the value of Pakistan's iron and steel scrap imports was $488.6 million, rising 4.3 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, Pakistan's iron and steel imports in May amounted to 147,665 mt, decreasing by five percent on year-on-year basis and down 10 percent compared to the previous month. The country's iron and steel imports in the July 2011-May 2012 period totaled 1.57 million mt, increasing by four percent year on year. In the period in question, the value of Pakistan's iron and steel imports was $1.2 billion, rising 11.6 percent year on year.
