Germany-based plantmaker SMS Group has announced that it has received the final acceptance certificate from Australian steelmaker OneSteel Limited for the revamping of its walking beam furnace in Whyalla, Australia. The furnace has a throughput capacity of 200 mt per hour.

Following the revamp and restart, the furnace uses less fuel and can be finally operated with all the benefits of a modern automation. Furthermore, the furnace combustion system has been updated to the latest safety regulations applicable in Australia. The revamp has been carried out completely by SMS Meer SpA, Italy, a subsidiary of SMS Group. All burners of the furnace have been replaced with brand new units, helping to decrease the emission of dangerous chemicals.
