OECD unemployment rate stable at 6.4 percent in April

In April this year, the unemployment rate of the 34 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries remained stable month on month at 6.4 percent, 1.7 percentage points below the January 2013 peak, according to new figures published by the OECD. The number of unemployed in the OECD region in April was 39.4 million people, 9.4 million less than in January 2013, but still 6.8 million more than in April 2008, immediately before the crisis. 
 
In April, on month-on-month basis, the unemployment rate for the euro area remained at 10.2 percent. In the given month, the unemployment rate remained stable in Canada at 7.1 percent, in Japan at 3.2 percent and in the United States at 5.0 percent, all compared to March. In April, the unemployment rate in Mexico and South Korea decreased by 0.1 percentage point on month-on-month basis to 4.0 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively.
