Charlotte, North Carolina-based Nucor Corporation announced Thursday that the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality has issued an air quality permit for its direct reduced iron making facility in St. James Parish, Louisiana.

Now that the project has cleared this hurdle, Nucor can begin the process of ordering equipment and commencing construction. The permit covers the construction and operation of two plants: one DRI plant to be built immediately and another sometime in the future.  Combined, the two facilities will produce 5.5 million tons of direct reduced iron (DRI) annually.
