North American steel industry becomes a little greener

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the Steel Manufacturers Association announced that North American steel manufacturers are becoming more and more energy conscious every year. The announcement came at the joint annual meeting between the two organizations. In 2003 the industry had reduced its energy usage per ton of steel by 7% and improved its total reduction 23% since 1990; CO2 emissions per ton dropped by a comparable amount. The industry has an agreement with the US Department of Energy to reduce energy consumption per ton by 10% over a ten year period from 2002 to 2012.
