Russian steelmaker NLMK Group has announced that it has  received approval from the Russian federal authorities for the construction of a facility with an annual capacity of 700,000 mt of metallurgical briquettes from iron-containing waste at the company's Lipetsk site.

According to NLMK's statement, the briquettes will be manufactured using a hard extrusion method from a mix of iron ore concentrate and blast furnace sludge. The eco-friendly production of briquettes will not generate any dust or gas emissions.

Meanwhile, more than 350,000 mt of blast furnace waste will be recycled per year after the launch of the plant, while NLMK will suspend accumulating sludge and will begin to process current products.
