SteelOrbis Shanghai Jiangsu province-based Nanjing Iron & Steel United Co Ltd (NISCO) has commissioned its new wide and medium plate line. The construction of the new line, with a total investment of RMB 11 billion ($1.4 billion), had begun in December 2000 after being approved by the State Council. The project includes a blast furnace, two 150-mt converters, a 2,800 mm wide slab continuous casting machine, a 3,250 mm wide slab continuous casting machine, and a 3,500 mm plate rolling mill. The annual production capacity of the medium plate line can reach 3 million metric tons and above. Nanjing Steel -one of the major steel mills in Jiangsu Province- has a capacity close to that of Jiangsu-based Shagang. With crude steel production of 4.38 million metric tons in 2005, the mill ranks 22nd among Chinese mills.
