In May this year, new commercial vehicle registrations increased by 25.1 percent across the European Union (EU) compared to the same month last year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). Looking at new registrations in the major markets in the EU-27 region in May, Spain (-13.3 percent) is the only country recording a decline, while Germany (+38.4 percent), France (+32.2 percent) and the UK (+17.2 percent) indicated an expansion.
In the first five months of the year, a total of 835,539 new vehicles were registered in the EU-27, or up 15.8 percent from the same period a year ago. In terms of volume, France recorded the most new registrations (208,227 units) or 12.4 percent growth, followed by Germany (133,848) and the UK (127,434) and which grew by 28.2 percent and 26.3 percent respectively.
All major markets in the EU-27 posted strong growth in the new heavy commercial vehicles market, leading to an overall year-on-year increase of 63.1 percent. From January to May, 132,525 new trucks were registered in the EU-27, or 49.2 percent more than in the same period last year. In the meantime, new registrations of buses and coaches were up by 5.3 percent year on year in May.
