The Russian steel producer Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has announced the restarting of operations at its third oxygen converter after an 88-day scheduled overhaul, in line with the company's plans to increase its production output.

The repair works in question, which were started in October 2008, included the simultaneous replacement of the frame of the converter, of the mantle ring and of the cooling boiler.

MMK's third oxygen converter, with an annual capacity of 3-3.5 million mt of steel, was put into operation in 1999 and allowed the mill to increase the annual capacity of its oxygen converter shop to 10 million mt of steel.
